CoGen is a project based class that pairs retired adults with high school students to design and develop a photography project together. Aside from the class itself, this program is meant to foster a co-generational relationship and produce a space for intergenerational learning and collaboration. We are pleased to have partnered with our friends at Innovation80 who funded this amazing program.

Michael Prapuolenis & Sebastian Juarez
Michael & Sebastian are lifelong Chicagoans. Both enjoy many games. Sebastian is primarily interested in sports and street photography, while Michael’s interests are birds & wildlife as well as street photography. For this project, they chose the theme: “Getting around.” Their collaboration sets out to capture the city's streets' hustle and bustle as Chicagoans go about their day.

This project brings together two distinct photographic voices, united by a shared fascination with the quiet anomalies of light. Rooted in abstract minimalism, these images operate in the spaces between clarity and obscurity-using muted tones and monochrome palettes to lean into the unknown. We are captivated by light’s power to answer questions and create mysteries in the shadows simultaneously. This collection of photographs is an invitation to look past the familiar and sit with the beautiful dilemmas left in the dark.

Marcos Perez & Eileen Ryan
Our collaborative project explores the tension found in public spaces between visibility and self-preservation. Across various neighborhoods in Chicago, from Pilsen and Little Village to Uptown, marginalized communities in Chicago have been forced to navigate a heightened environment of fear, driven by aggressive ICE activity. In response, people begin to retreat from the street and are forced to hide themselves to protect their loved ones.
We captured community members in their everyday environment through street portraits. Our imagery explores how people can still express and reveal their true selves within a single frame.

Dillon Dochenetz & Kambua Chema
Our project is called Feels Like Summer. Our photographs have a subject within a warm environment that tells a story about the relationship between the place and the subject. Each portrait tells an individual story, while together they create a larger portrait that portrays summers in Chicago. Feels Like Summer invites viewers to look closely, remain curious, and consider the stories held within the people and places we pass every day.
